My Approach to Architecture and Design

My work is inspired by the hopes and needs of my clients in conjunction with my desire to integrate the physical, emotional and spiritual realms.  A particular architectural style is of less importance to me.  Spatial volumes, interior and exterior shapes, an organized plan and adjacencies, the relationship and integral connection to the site, natural light, structure, materials, details, mechanical and lighting systems and a multitude of other factors all play a part in creating a building of worth.

“David Rulon is one of the most innovative and creative minds I’ve ever met. He has the ability to develop and communicate around the overall vision, but can also go deep and obsess on the most nuanced details. Often times that is where his genius is most apparent. At his core he is not just a standard architect, but also an inventor, an artist and a visionary. Since hiring David as our architect to design our private residence on the ONEHOPE vineyard, he has become part of our ONEHOPE family. We’re all very thankful to have had the opportunity to work alongside a person with such impressive talent and a great disposition. All that being said, the strength of my words pale in comparison to observing many of the living, breathing physical structures that he has helped dream up over the years. Come on over and check out his work!”

Great architecture is built upon a continuum of the work of famous and lesser known architects through time.  The best work integrates elements of the human experience, both physical and spiritual, with the artistic and functional aspects of a building and its site.  The end result must be a cohesive whole that works on many levels.

In my past experience working for others, I have sought out architects whose work I respect and enjoy and from whom I have learned a lot.  I have had a broad range of experience working on many building types at all different scales.

I seek to do work that has resonance and offers my own voice. Collaboration with input from many sources is a key element to a successful, functional and beautiful project.
